Ammonite the Fossil - now extinct, the ammonite mollusc was a shelled cephalopod, usually appearing in a coiled, spiral shape. In India, ammonite fossils are identified with the god Vishnu and are used in various ceremonies. These fossils are known as "shaligram shila".
